About the episode
In this episode I like to share with you my self experiment with fasting. And not any type of fasting but an extended fast of 100h. After interviewing Paul in season 4 episode 10 of his 72h/3 day fast as a type 1 diabetic, I was intrigued to try something similar. Obviously fasting comes quiet with it’s own challenges as a non diabetic, but as a diabetic, there is much more to consider
And my findings blew my mind! Not just was I am able to reduce my overall insulin needs to just over 1unite in 24h, I also gained mental clarity, boost in energy, improved skin, better digestion, less food intollerance and….happiness. But let’s start at the beginning. I will start off with different types of fasts and then go through my 4 days with you and what happened in regards to my blood sugar and more.
My aim is, that after this episode you feel equipped with knowledge on how extended fasts work and how they can benefit you, especially but not exclusively when you have diabetes. This episode will open your mind to new possibilities and bust many myths along the way.
As always, this is no medical advice. Before you make any changes to your health treatment, speak to your medical team. This is my personal experience only.

7-10th show a clear decrease in total insulin needs in 24h.
Benefits of fasting
All fasts will cleanse and detoxify. I wanted to detox my body and find out what will happen with my blood sugars and keton levels. I wanted to provide a natural resting period for my body to eliminate waste materials and promote healing. Because fasting initiates the body’s own healing mechanisms. Depending on type and length of fast and from person to person, fasting can have many benefits. And I was keen to experience some of those:
1. rest the digestive system
(It is estimated that 65% of the body’s energy must be directed to the digestive organs after a heavy meal.)
2. allow cleansing and detoxification of the body (medications), which can lead to a more resilient immune system, rejuvenation, revitalization, reduction of allergies, clearer skin, better sleep
3. creates a break in and reflection of eating patterns
4. promotes greater mental clarity (mentally and emotionally)
5. lead to a feeling of physical lightness, increasing energy level and enthusiasm toward life
6. promote an inner stillness, relaxation, enhances awareness and improved senses (vision, hearing, taste)
7. weight loss
In no way was I am chasing an unhealthy insulin reduction. Reduction in this experiment was needed to avoid lows. Radioning insulin is a condition called diabulimia. This is a serious issue with needs to be regognised and dealt with professionally.
